MARIO FRATTI-FRED NEWMAN POLITICAL PLAY CONTEST

INFO: The Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest is intended to encourage the writing of progressive plays that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today and/or historical events and issues that impact on our communities.

The contest encourages scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance. Castillo welcomes scripts from all countries and cultures.

The plays submitted to the Fratti-Newman Political Play Contest may be written in any style, set in any historical time, geographic or imaginary location, contain any number of characters and be of any length. The plays must be in English and cannot be musicals or adaptations. No scripts will be considered that have previously been submitted to this contest, have received a production or won other contests. Only one script per playwright per year will be accepted.

The contest is judged by a team of distinguished theatre artists.

PRIZE: The winning script(s) will receive a reading at the Castillo Theatre in New York City during the theatre’s 2017 summer season.

INFO: Theatre LILA, an Equity theatre company in Madison WI, is accepting submissions from playwrights for their upcoming original work entitled The BED: a Theatre LILA invention. They are seeking short scenes ranging from five minutes to maximum of thirty minutes. They will not be accepting monologues.

Writers should know that the entire scene will be set around a large four poster bed. Submitted works must revolve around this set piece only plus props. The cast may not exceed 8 actors. They are a company dedicated to presenting plays that represent their community and are seeking a diverse collection of voices from all cultural backgrounds, races and ages.

All selected scripts will be combined to create the world premiere of The BED. This collage-like production will be produced by Theatre LILA in March, 2017.

AWARD: Writers will receive a small stipend, a pair of complimentary tickets to the production and acknowledgement in press, website and playbill materials.

The 2017 Cimientos will consists of two main components:

PPP (Pal Playwrights Panel): Playwrights accepted to the program, IATI Theater’s artistic staff and other specially invited theater professionals will converge in workshop meetings to discuss the new works that make up the particular season. Every meeting will be dedicated to a single playwright in the program, the focus being in further advancing the text before it is presented in front of a live audience.
SRP (Staged Reading Presentation): Each playwright in the program will be given the opportunity to present his/her play in a directed, professionally acted staged reading. Thus, the piece will be exposed to a receptive audience that further develops the featured script through a post-reading talkback.

INFO: In honor of its 10th anniversary in 2017 Buran Theater will support and produce theatre/performance-based artists through transformative 2-year process-based fellowships. Utilizing the Buran process developed over the past decade by the artistic director and associate artists, CartHorse Fellows will build, produce and present a new theatre work over two rigorous years of development with the support of the company’s resources and talent.

THE WRITING FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Playwrights Realm

INFO: Four early-career playwrights will receive nine months of resources, workshops and feedback designed to help them reach their professional and artistic goals. Over the course of the season, Fellows develop a single new play. Monthly group meetings provide a collaborative, energizing setting for writers to share and refine their work. Individual meetings with the Realm’s Artistic Director and Literary Director support each writer’s specific artistic process. Fellows work with a director, design consultant, and actors over the course of two workshops to see their work come to life. Professional development resources are also an integral part of the program and are tailored to the individual group of Writing Fellows. Mentor opportunities, meet-and-greets, and professional workshops shed light on the often opaque business of theatre, and empower the Fellows to be active, informed participants in their own careers. The Writing Fellows season culminates in a public reading of each fellowship play as part of our INK’D Festival of New Plays.

PROGRAM CRITERIA:

Playwrights must be able to attend meetings and workshops in New York City on a twice-monthly basis from September 2016 through May 2017.
Playwrights should identify as early-career.
Those enrolled in an MFA program during the span of fellowship are not eligible.
Plays to be considered for the fellowship should be complete drafts (minimum 60 pages) at a stage of development that would benefit from a nine-month rewriting and workshop process. Plays should have no commitments to other theaters that will limit their development with The Playwrights Realm.
Plays going through another similar development process simultaneously, or that have had a production outside of an academic environment, are not eligible.
They are not looking for solo performance projects at this time.

The Workshop will take place from July 13-17, 2016 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, TX. They are seeking generous and compassionate professional writers who view their work and talents as part of a larger task of community-building and non-violent social change. This year, they will hold four workshops led by Allison Hedge Coke (poetry), Alex Espinoza (fiction), Gregg Barrios (playwriting), and Joe Jimenez (multi-genre young writers’ workshop).

INFO: The Tulsa Artist Fellowship, which seeks talented and diverse voices to support Tulsa’s expanding arts scene, has expanded its program this year to include writing (creative nonfiction, fiction, graphic novel, young-adult fiction, poetry, and play/screenwriting).
