MACONDO WRITERS’ WORKSHOP

INFO: Founded by Sandra Cisneros in 1995, the Macondo Writers’ Workshop focuses on bringing together a community of poets, novelists, journalists, performance artists, and creative writers of all genres whose work is socially engaged,

The Workshop will take place from July 13-17, 2016 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, TX. They are seeking generous and compassionate professional writers who view their work and talents as part of a larger task of community-building and non-violent social change. This year, they will hold four workshops led by Allison Hedge Coke (poetry), Alex Espinoza (fiction), Gregg Barrios (playwriting), and Joe Jimenez (multi-genre young writers’ workshop).

To be eligible, applicants must have a strong record of publications (books, chapbooks, major literary magazines) and/or public readings/performances of original work, and a history of community involvement, consciousness raising via literary work and/or activism/outreach.

TULSA ARTIST FELLOWSHIP

INFO: The Tulsa Artist Fellowship, which seeks talented and diverse voices to support Tulsa’s expanding arts scene, has expanded its program this year to include writing (creative nonfiction, fiction, graphic novel, young-adult fiction, poetry, and play/screenwriting). Fellowships are merit-based, not project grants, and include a two-year term for writers. The program will begin on January 9, 2017.

AWARD: $20,000 stipend, and in most cases, free housing and studio work space.

DR. FLOYD GAFFNEY PLAYWRIGHTING COMPETITION

Wagner New Play Festival

INFO: The Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition, part of the Wagner New Play Festival, seeks submissions of scripts highlighting African American experience in contemporary or historical terms from all enrolled undergraduate students at UC San Diego’s Theatre and Dance Department.

AWARD: $1,000 to the winning undergraduate author, along with travel and lodging to participate in the play’s staged reading at the Wagner New Play Festival.

PLAYWRIGHTS REVOLUTION 2016

Capital Stage

INFO: Capital Stage, based in Sacramento, CA, seeks submissions for Playwrights Revolution, a series of staged readings that seeks to identify and develop exciting new plays and playwrights. New works are brought to theatrical life through performances by professional actors in Capital Stage’s intimate theatre. Submissions must be full-length plays in any genre: comedy, drama, musical, etc. Translations, collections of one-acts, children’s plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible.

2016-17 VAN LIER NEW VOICES FELLOWSHIP

The Lark

INFO: The Lark is accepting applications for the 2016-17 Van Lier New Voices Fellowship program, which supports playwrights of color under 30 who demonstrate financial need. During a year-long residency, Fellows will work on multiple artistic projects through an individually-tailored program of Lark play development programs, and form relationships with other theatermakers at various career stages from all parts of the world.

AWARD: $15,000, plus a $3,000 health insurance allowance, along with access to a wide range of Lark resources, including artistic program participation, financial literacy workshops, office and rehearsal space and staff support.

Fade to Black Play Festival

INFO: Fade to Black Play Festival seeks original, not previously produced, unpublished work written by an African American playwright. Directors and Actors based in Houston, Texas are encouraged to participate.  Only three (3) scripts submissions are allowed per playwright.

AWARD: One grand prize winner will be chosen by audience vote and awarded a cash prize.

DRAMATISTS GUILD FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Dramatists Guild of America

INFO: The Dramatists Guild of America, the only organization devoted solely to the interests of artists writing for the theater, is now accepting applications for its Fellows Program. This year, they will select five playwrights for a nine-month program that includes group sessions with theater professional, one-on-one mentoring, and an opportunity to become interns or observers with dramatists involved in professional productions.
